전시 서문

《빛의 구축》은 흙을 덧발라 형태를 만들어가는 과정에서 발생하는 흔적과, 그 흔적이 빛을 통해 드러나는 방식에 주목한다.

본 작업은 흙물을 붓으로 반복해 바르는 행위에서 시작된다. 도자 제작 과정에서 붓질은 주로 기물의 표면을 장식하는 수단으로 사용되지만, 이를 기벽을 겹겹이 쌓아 올려 형태를 구축하는 방식으로 전환한다.

형틀 내벽에 비닐을 부착한 뒤, 그 위에 흙물을 반복해 덧바른다. 흙이 자립할 수 있는 두께가 확보되면 형틀과 비닐을 제거한다. 이 과정에서 붓질의 흔적은 기물의 내벽에, 비닐의 주름은 외벽에 남는다. 얇게 형성된 기벽은 소성 후 빛을 투과시키며, 안팎에 남겨진 흔적을 더욱 선명하게 드러낸다.

빛은 완성된 기물의 표면을 비추는 동시에, 얇은 기벽을 투과하여 제작 과정에서 축적된 흔적을 드러내는 매개로작동한다. 이는 표면 장식에 주로 사용되던 붓질을 구조 형성의 방식으로 확장한 것과 작업 맥락을 같이한다. 이로써 재료와 기법, 그리고 빛은 본래의 주된 쓰임에 머무르지 않고 새로운 해석 속에서 작용한다.

《빛의 구축》은 완성된 형태에 축적된 제작의 과정과 시간을 바라보게 한다. 흙이라는 물질과 붓질이라는 행위, 그리고 이를 투영하는 빛의 상호작용을 통해 형태가 만들어지는 순간 자체를 하나의 경험으로 제안한다.

《Construction of Light》

Construction of Light Construction of Light explores the traces created as clay is built up layer by layer, and the way these traces emerge through light.

 

The work begins with the repeated application of liquid clay using a brush. In ceramics, brushwork is usually used to decorate the surface of an object. Here, the artist shifts this familiar gesture towards a different purpose, using it to gradually build the walls of the form itself.

 

A vinyl sheet is attached to the inside of a mould, and liquid clay is repeatedly brushed over it. Once the clay has built up to a thickness that can hold its own form, the mould and vinyl are removed. The marks left by the brush remain on the inner wall, while the folds of the vinyl appear on the outer surface. After firing, the thin clay wall allows light to pass through, bringing these traces into sharper view.

 

Light not only falls across the surface of the finished work, but also passes through its thin walls, revealing the marks accumulated during the making process. In this sense, the work extends brushwork beyond its familiar role as surface decoration, turning it into a way of constructing form. Material, technique and light are each given room to take on a different role and meaning.

 

《Construction of Light》 draws attention to the time and process held within a finished form. Through the interaction of clay, the gesture of brushing, and the light that reveals what has been left behind, the work invites us to experience the moment in which a form comes into being.
